Message from the President

Namaste!

I would like to draw your kind attention towards why we constructed the statue of late Babu Chhiri Sherpa as well as his museum in the heart of Kathmandu city (near International airport).

As you know Late Babu Chhiri Sherpa was a renowned personality in the mountaineering. He had many world records to his credit like climbing Mt. Everest two times in the same season, stepping on the summit of Everest without oxygen and spending 21 hours on the world's tallest point without using bottled oxygen. He also earned himself the fastest record of climbing Mt Everest in 16hours and 56 minutes. We nepalese people and all the familiar personalities in tourism and mountaineering field have great respect towards him. To keep his memories alive, we build his statue and museum which was inaugurated by HRH Crown Prince and Princess of Nepal on 25th September 2005. Minister of Tourism, Deputy Minister and Buddhist Religious teacher were also present during the ceremony. The museum contains the accessories and cloths used and worn by Babu Chhiri while climbing Mt. Everest. This is first time in Nepal that museum of such kind is constructed.

Based on our own effort and recommendation obtained from various social organizations, it took one year to get the land from His Majesty's Government. We also received financial and moral support from Government related organizations as well as other social and business organizations and individuals.

The museum was constructed with a total cost of Rs. 37,98000.00 (thirty seven lakh and ninety eight thousand rupees). The names of the supporters and financial contributors are all embossed at the base of the statue. We would like to thank Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) for providing the largest amount of donation, Kathmandu Municipal Corporation and Tuborg Beer, Sting (international singer) and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation for largest amount of donation. «see a list of all the contributors»

The statue and the museum is located near the Tribhuvan International Airport, before Bagmati bridge, on the left side of the road. I would like to request you all individuals to pay your kind visit to the museum once and find out about the fact of this great mountaineer. The museum hall is also available for conducting seminars, talk programmes and conferences.

I wish to thank once again for all your financial, moral, physical and emotional contributions in achieving goals of ESA. I wish for your continued support in the future. And my personal thanks for visiting our website and reading my message.

Thank you,

Wongchu Sherpa
