About Us

Mount Everest has always been an icon for mountaineers all over the world. Until 29th of May 1953, this formidable mountain stood unconquered. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa changed that and opened up a whole new dimension of mountaineering. The mountain is now the most revered peak in the world and thousands of people make summit attempts every year.

However, the environmental impact that mountaineers have had on this mountain has not gone unnoticed. Nor has the social and cultural impact expeditions have on the Sherpa people that inhabit the area.

Little do we think that climbing Everest is only about the mountaineer, it goes way beyond that. The path of a mountaineer, successful or unsuccessful, touches the lives of many and also impacts the environment. With that in mind, we have formed this association to raise awareness and to act upon the issues that have arose with the environment, Sherpa people’s well being and to preserve the culture of the people living in area.

The event was organized to raise awareness about the climate change.

Background of the Establishment - 'Everest Summiteers Association'

There was a realization that no organization closely observe the moment when the climbers  lose their lives in the course of climbing.
In the month of Mangsir, 2057 B.S. (2000 A.D.), on a cold day in Kathmandu, journalist Diwas Pokhrel was discussing Everest related issues with trekking Businessmen Keshav Poudel and Mahadev Sharma. Pokhrel asked, “What if we form an Everest Summiteers Association?” Poudel and Sharma thought it was a great idea. Since Pokhrel was also a tourism journalist, drafting the Association’s rules wasn’t difficult for him. He immediately started working on it. While the rules were being prepared, climber Wangchu Sherpa was informed about the Association. At first, Wangchu said he might not have time to be involved. But after hearing from Pokhrel and Sharma, he agreed to support the idea. The discussions took place at a trekking company’s office in Thamel, Kathmandu. Wangchu Sherpa then gathered well-known climbers like Speed Kaji Sherpa, Babu Chhiri, Apa, and others. After discussions, they decided to form the association. On Poush 11, 2057 B.S.(December 26, 2000), the association was officially registered at the District Administration Office, Kathmandu.

The first management team included Wangchu Sherpa as President, Kaji Sherpa as First Vice President, Babu Chhiri Sherpa as Second Vice President, Diwas Pokhrel as General Secretary, Apa Sherpa as Secretary, Mahadev Sharma as Treasurer, and Pema Doma Sherpa as Deputy Secretary. Members included Mingma Chhiring Sherpa from Dolakha and Kami Sherpa. After forming the Association, they worked to make the Prime Minister the official patron.

The government agreed, and they also decided to include the Minister and Secretary of Tourism, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Nepal Mountaineering Association and the Trekking Agents Association as advisors.
When climber Babu Chhiri Sherpa tragically died on Baisakh 16, 2058 B.S. (April 29, 2001), Apa Sherpa, Kami Sherpa, Pema Doma Sherpa, and other founding members were re-elected without opposition. In the third election, Wangchu Sherpa remained President, Speed Kaji Sherpa was First Vice President, Apa Sherpa became Second Vice President, Diwas Pokhrel continued as General Secretary, Mingma Dorje Sherpa was elected Treasurer, and Nawang Dorje Sherpa became Secretary. Other elected members included Kami Sherpa(Nepal Television), Lakpa Gyalje Shepa and Kami Sherpa.
